| RYO Brief History | Hits: 32 |
Roll your own tobacco is one of the oldest forms of smoking, occurring before even the earliest pipes were made. Thousands of years ago, Native Americans rolled their own tobacco in corn or palm leaves. It wasn’t until more than 350 years after Europeans began colonizing the Americas that the first factory made cigarettes were produced.
Machine-made cigarettes grew in popularity in the early 20th century and RYO was largely left behind, being smoked by those who were cost-conscious or for people who enjoyed making their own cigarettes.
In the 1950s, cigarette manufacturers began to produce filter cigarettes. While some smokers stuck to unfiltered cigarettes, the filtered variety quickly became the most popular.
RYO has enjoyed more popularity in many European countries than in the United States. But in recent years, RYO is significantly growing as smokers want to save money or they find that the process of making the cigarettes has become much easier, thanks to the invention of cigarette rolling machines and cigarette tubes.
